Endoscopy Q&A

What is an endoscopy?

An endoscopy, also called an upper endoscopy or EGD, is a procedure in which Dr. Harrington uses an endoscope (a thin, flexible tube with a camera and light) to examine the lining of your upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract. That includes your esophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum).

Who needs an endoscopy?

You may need the test if you have ongoing acid reflux, unexplained abdominal pain, or GI bleeding.

With an endoscopy, Dr. Harrington can confirm or rule out conditions like:

  • Esophagitis - inflammation of the esophagus
  • Esophageal strictures - narrowing of the esophagus
  • Barrett’s esophagus - change in the tissue lining the esophagus
  • Stomach ulcers
  • Celiac disease
  • Esophageal or stomach cancer

During the procedure, she can take tissue samples and perform procedures like esophageal balloon dilation (stretching out a narrowed esophagus to improve swallowing) for esophageal strictures.

What happens during an endoscopy?

Dr. Harrington performs your endoscopy at an outpatient center. Before the endoscopy starts, you’re given medication to help you relax.

Dr. Harrington inserts the endoscope in your mouth and slowly advances it towards your small intestine, evaluating the tissue as she goes.

The entire test takes about 30 minutes.

What happens after an endoscopy?

Dr. Harrington sends you to the recovery area following your endoscopy. She may share the findings from the procedure with you before sending you home. You must have someone drive you home after your endoscopy and plan to take the rest of the day off.

You can resume your normal diet right after the procedure and get back to your usual activities by the next day.

Dr. Harrington may schedule a follow-up appointment to discuss the findings from the endoscopy and what needs to happen next.
